The historic Toledo Zoo Aquarium underwent its first major renovation in the building’s 74-year history, and the Piping Industry worked hard to ensure the local landmark reopened looking better than ever.
Toledo Zoo Aquarium
After being closed for nearly two and a half years, the newly renovated Toledo Zoo Aquarium reopened to the public on March 27, 2015, thanks in large part to the members of the Northwest Ohio Piping Industry.
The $25.5 million renovation helped take the aquarium from a 1930s era design into an artistic and aesthetically pleasing display of marine life.
The Aquarium is now home to more than 3,000 aquatic animals living in about 178,000 gallons of water, which, according to the zoo’s website, is nearly four times the volume of the previous Aquarium.
Prior to the renovation, the largest tank was 7,600 gallons. Today, the largest tank holds about 90,000 gallons and contains a two-story viewing window. The Reef, as it is called, is the focal point of the entire museum and allows visitors to interact with divers who will feed the fish at scheduled times during the day.
Members of the Piping Industry played a large role in renovating the aquarium including all plumbing, HVAC and tank and filtration installation work.
One of more technical aspects of the project involved the installation of new filtration systems throughout the facility. One of the more advanced systems is located within the interactive petting tanks. These special, state-of-the-art filtration systems are designed to keep the marine life healthy by removing body oils, sunscreen, dirt and other contaminants introduced to the tanks as part of the interactive experience.
The Northwest Ohio Piping Industry is proud to have played a role in the renovation of Toledo Zoo Aquarium and our members look forward to seeing their work on display every time they visit.
