Rigging Recertification

Rigging certification confirms a person’s proficiency in safely inspecting, selecting, and using rigging equipment for heavy loads, often required by employers to meet OSHA standards. While OSHA doesn’t mandate formal certification, accredited organizations like NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) provide the gold standard for Rigger Level 1 and 2, involving both written and practical exams.

  • Safety & Inspection: Identifying, inspecting, and safely using slings and rigging hardware.
  • Load Calculation: Calculating load weights, center of gravity, and sling angles.
  • Signal Operations: Using standardized hand/voice signals for crane operators.
  • Lift Planning: Understanding rigging techniques, crane dynamics, and rigging gear.

Recertification

The following information applies specifically to the CCO Rigger Level I and Rigger Level II certifications.

CCO certification is valid for five years. Candidates must complete all of their recertification requirements during the 12 months prior to their certification’s expiration date. This includes:

The Rigger written exams for recertification are identical to the written exams for initial certification. There is no requirement for a Practical Examination for recertification.

There is no grace period after certification has expired. Candidates whose certification has lapsed must take the full Written and Practical Examinations to be certified again.
