EPA: Billions Must Be Spent to Maintain and Upgrade Nation’s Water Systems

In January, the United States Environmental Protection Agency released a survey showing the nation needs to spend $271 billion to maintain and improve the country’s water systems.

The survey, according to the EPA, estimates the capital investment necessary for publicly owned treatment works (POTW) to address the water quality objectives of the Clean Water Act (CWA). This work ensures POTWs meet minimum CWA standards.

Among the items listed in the survey that need to be maintained, upgraded or replaced include:

UA, Roofers Announce New Parternship

The United Association has a new partner – a fellow American union.

On August 1, the UA and Roofers Union formally agreed to an affiliation to work together on water capture systems.

The partnership allows both sides to retain their organizational independence, but aligns both groups on training, safety, marketing, organizing and other issues pertaining to water conservation and water capture systems. The unions will retain autonomy in regards to structure, finances, internal affairs, collective bargaining agreements and benefits.

Mayor Collins Addresses Congress on Water Improvement Initiatives

“Water crisis grips Toledo area.” “‘Do not drink, do not boil’ water.” “The toxin that shut off Toledo’s water.”

All of us in Northwest Ohio recall the pollution emergency that crippled Toledo’s water supply for three days this August. Now Mayor D. Michael Collins is fighting to make sure this kind of environmental attack does not happen again.

On December 3, Mayor Collins addressed the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee to request $13 million in federal funding for water improvement initiatives. Collins requested funding for additional research to improve water quality and for funding to implement infrastructur
e and conservation improvements of watersheds that affect Lake Erie.

During his address, Collins discussed the fact that water testing standards developed by the World Health Organization in 1996 have not been evaluated or confirmed by our Federal EPA.
