Next year, Toledo will be a hotbed of action centered largely on major construction projects. To get a clearer idea of what it takes to become tradesmen and tradeswomen to work on these and other projects, a number of local government officials toured the Piping Industry Training Center last week.
Members of the Department of Ohio Jobs and Family Services of Wood County, the Wood County Economic Development Department and Wood County Commissioners and their staff toured the PITC. The officials spoke with representatives from the Piping Industry and learned what it takes to make a skilled professional.

Members of the Piping Industry are learning new automatic welding techniques and procedures that will be used at the Oregon Clean Energy Center. These automated procedures will exponentially cut down complete weld time compared to hand welding by decreasing end preparation time while increasing deposition rate and overall weld precision. These advantages are made possible due to two innovative machines made by Tri Tool.
The first machine is Tri Tool’s RBL-G2 split frame next generation Clamshell Lathe. This tool was designed with safety as the top priority, and delivers faster, better performance when doing end prep work.
The safety of the tool comes from a fixed-position tripper mechanism with tapered drive housing, which minimizes pinch points, giving the operator increased safety when using the lathe.

It is a national holiday designed to celebrate the American worker; a holiday earned by union laborers, who fought for an honest wage, better working conditions and shorter work hours.
As Labor Day weekend approaches, many families will be gearing up for one last party on this much deserved three-day weekend off work.

The United Association has a new partner – a fellow American union.
On August 1, the UA and Roofers Union formally agreed to an affiliation to work together on water capture systems.
The partnership allows both sides to retain their organizational independence, but aligns both groups on training, safety, marketing, organizing and other issues pertaining to water conservation and water capture systems. The unions will retain autonomy in regards to structure, finances, internal affairs, collective bargaining agreements and benefits.

In late April, hundreds of guests, including elected officials, educators, area contractors, industry professionals, and media members filled our Training Center during an Industry Day open house. The event was held in conjunction with the 2015 UA Ohio State Apprenticeship Competition, which featured the best of the best apprentices statewide as they showed off the skills they have learned both in the classroom and on the job.

Employees in certain industries, including construction are being taken advantage of from a financial standpoint by their employers.
A June report released by the Economic Policy Institute sheds light on an alarming trend in America known as employee misclassification that is rampant within industries that rely heavily on a chain of subcontractors such as construction and trucking.
Between 10 and 20 percent of employers nationwide, misclassify at least one worker as an independent contractor. According to the report, this trend is likely to have increased in recent years.
Employee misclassification occurs when a company treats someone who should be classified as a direct hire as a self-employed, independent contractor.
