Next year, Toledo will be a hotbed of action centered largely on major construction projects. To get a clearer idea of what it takes to become tradesmen and tradeswomen to work on these and other projects, a number of local government officials toured the Piping Industry Training Center last week.
Members of the Department of Ohio Jobs and Family Services of Wood County, the Wood County Economic Development Department and Wood County Commissioners and their staff toured the PITC. The officials spoke with representatives from the Piping Industry and learned what it takes to make a skilled professional.

On August 1, the UA and Roofers Union formally agreed to an affiliation to work together on water capture systems.
The partnership allows both sides to retain their organizational independence, but aligns both groups on training, safety, marketing, organizing and other issues pertaining to water conservation and water capture systems. The unions will retain autonomy in regards to structure, finances, internal affairs, collective bargaining agreements and benefits.

On March 9, the Piping Industry visited Rogers High School to help Dr. Romules Durant, Superintendent of the Toledo Public School District, experience firsthand the partnership between the skilled trades and the school district's Career Technology Department.
Along with Dr. Durant, the Piping Industry's Chris Weaver and Steve Stewart met with Keith Dawson, program coordinator for the Construction Career Academy; Tom Dimitrew, director of Agriculture, Construction and Engineering for TPS; and the Career Technology Advisory Committee.
Dr. Durant got the chance to get his hands dirty as he interacted with real life scenarios, like donning a safety harness hooked to a chain-fall while a student lifted him above the ground.
