Piping Industry Apprentices Crowned State Champions

Piping Industry Apprentices

Two apprentices from the Northwest Ohio Piping Industry brought home top honors from the 2016 Ohio United Association Apprenticeship Contest held in Cleveland, April 19-21.

Dusseau and Boyer

HVAC-R apprentice Jeremy Boyer and pipefitter Jared Dusseau each won a state title in their respective categories and advanced to the Regional UA Apprentice Contest.

Derrick Van Hove, the Piping Industry’s plumbing apprentice, finished third behind winner Don Hall (Youngstown).

John Sabetta defended his home turf as the Clevelander finished first in sprinkler fitting, giving Cleveland back-to-back titles in that category. Welder Justin Alban (Cambridge) earned a state title as well.

This year, 46 apprentices competed in the competition, which instructors called one of the toughest state contests in the nation – noting that far less competitors will be at the Regional and International Competitions.

With his HVAC-R victory, Dusseau gave the Piping Industry their second straight State championship in that trade. Last year, Scott White was crowned best HVAC-R apprentice when the event was held at the Piping Industry Training Center in Northwood, Ohio.

Also representing the Piping Industry during the three-day competition (April 19-21) was welder apprentice Brian Dussel.

Congratulations to all of our apprentices who represented the Piping Industry. They all proved that they belong among the state’s best apprentices.

The five state champions will now take part in the District 2 regional competition in Washington D.C in early June. Those skilled enough to advance out of the regional competition will then vie for the national title in Ann Arbor later in the year.

Since 2007, the Northwest Ohio Piping Industry has produced 15 State Champions, five of whom went on to become Regional Champions, and four National Champions.

The Piping Industry congratulates all who competed. We wish the best of luck to the five champions representing Ohio at the next level – especially those representing the Piping Industry!
