In September, the Piping Industry was honored to welcome Ohio Lt. Governor Mary Taylor and Doris Herringshaw, vice president of the Wood County Board of Commissioners, for a tour of our state-of-the-art, 45,000 sq. ft. Training Center.
The Piping Industry Training Center houses the classrooms and skills labs for apprentices to hone their plumbing, steamfitting, HVAC, and welding techniques. This, in combination with on-the-job training under the tutelage of a journeyman in their chosen trade, comprises the industry-funded education apprentices receive to become part of the best trained workforce in Northwest Ohio.
“The facilities and the people are a great example of the type of character our state is built on,” said Lt. Governor Taylor, stating that she was “very impressed” with the pride everyone at the Piping Industry takes in their work. “It is important for those looking for work, or our youth looking for career opportunities, to know that these training facilities exist. These are good paying jobs that are rewarding and offer a lot of options many Ohioans may not know exist.”
Piping Industry apprentices earn while they learn, receiving escalating wages as they advance throughout the 5-year training program. They also receive numerous health and welfare benefits, as well as credit towards an Associate of Applied Science Degree offered by Owens Community College.
“I hear from employers all over the state that we need more skilled workers,” said Lt. Governor Taylor, adding that it is great to see a facility like the Piping Industry Training Center “meet Ohio employers’ needs, and at the same time, give workers the chance to support their families while doing something they love.”
